As with all kinds of public transport, there are certain rules of etiquette that would need to be followed by passengers travelling in a lift or on an escalator.
Believe it or not, these small set of rules continually shape our society and without them, it makes human interaction a tiny bit awkward. The best place to start understanding and testing out general etiquette is in a lift or on an escalator, so here are some of the top rules we have shortlisted for our lift and escalator customers, and also their customers:
- When travelling in a full lift and you are standing closest to the doors, always be aware of your surroundings and other passengers wishing to exit. In this instance, it is courteous step out of the lift car to let others exit simply. Also, if it takes an exiting passenger a little longer to move through the crowd, reach out an arm to hold the doors so that they do not shut on them.
- In commercial buildings where the morning rush hours are beyond hectic, queues for the lifts are most likely to be formed. Avoid pushing in the queue and wait for the lifts patiently, as you and all the other passenger are in the same state of urgency.
- Recognise when a lift is full to capacity. The maximum number of lift passengers notice has been put in place solely for health and safety reasons and needs to be taken seriously, to prevent the chances of a potential lift breakdown.
- When stepping on to an escalator, do not stand in the middle and keep to one side. This is to make space on the other side for passengers who wish to walk up and down the escalator.
- Always leave one step between you and the passenger in front, as in some cases, there would be passengers travelling with luggage and it would cause discomfort if the passengers were standing too close together on the escalator.
